Legion of Honor - Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

San Francisco, CA

Rosa, Salvator

Year: ca. 1640

Type of Work: Painting

Description: Rosa was one of the seventeenth century’s foremost landscape artists. This large-scale work shows the influence of the Bamboccianti, a group of mostly non-Italians living in Rome who specialized in genre scenes featuring beggars, peasants, and brigands. The precise subject of this painting is difficult to determine: the group on the left may be receiving directions from the traveling peasants.
